Featuring the first of our four selected charities for the 2013 Woof-a-Thon:

Ocean Shores
Food Bank
With Leon Brauner, Operations Manager...

When was your organization started, and how has it grown over time?

The Ocean Shores Food Bank has been operating in Ocean Shores for over twenty years.  Its mission reminds us of its key goal:  “…so no one in our community goes hungry.”  During the past three years we have experienced growth of more than 11% per year.  This extraordinary community of ours just pitches in and helps us get the food to those in need, no matter how many more families come to our door.

What makes your organization unique in our community, in terms of helping needy animals?

When you have families and individuals in need, you also have their pets who are in need.  Many of our clients are single men and women whose best friend is their four-legged companion.  It is the best of all possible worlds when we can provide nutritious food for both our human client and their pet.  Woof-a-Thon helps us fulfill our role of assisting those in need.

How will funds from the Woof-a-Thon help you accomplish your goals?

The money raised by Woof-a-Thon will be used to purchase pet food for our client’s family pets and companions.  As you know we provide Christmas “baskets” for our clients, we are looking into the possibility of adding a pet toy or treat to this years baskets or perhaps creating a “pet basket,” if the non-food bank funds are available.

Final words to the participants and sponsors of the Woof-a-Thon?

It is difficult to separate a pet from its family.  The family that needs supplemental and emergency food probably also needs food for its pet.  Your donations of money and food help us maintain that wonderful relationship of family and pet.  We are very pleased to be a partner agency of the Woof-a-Thon event.

I am only 4 months old and I want to do a Woof-Out for the great day I had at PAWS' first annual WOOF-A-THON at Chinook Park on Saturday. I met so many new friends- at least a hundred.  They were all so friendly to me, and their owners were too.

Right at the start I met my own vet Stacey Steele at the O.S. Animal Hospital (who gave me a treat) and both she and the Raintree Veterinary Center in Hoquiam said I was gorgeous!!  And healthy! I also got a cool frisbee from the Hoquiam guys which I used for some needed water - also donated... by good ol' IGA.

And there were so many more treats!  Given out at every stall, some new tasty ones from Kool Kats and Dawgs, and from Dennis and Co. Later Saturday evening I couldn't stop playing with my new toys, Penny Hale said they were donated by her place - Pet Smart in Lacey.  Cool place, I've been there!

Best of all I got to participate in my first ever Contest- I got Third Place for Longest Ears (they even included the little big of hair hanging down!) and then drum roll please... I got FIRST PLACE for Fluffiest Dog, just barely beating out a couple of tiny Lap Fluffballs. Here I am with my Trophy. I got another toy as well.

Great Dane - I mean great day!  Can't wait till next one!

Holly Dolly Van Dalen, aged 4 months

PS: I really woud like to thank my very own family... my dad and my ma-Pete and Nonni Van Dalen for bringing me today, and for the shampoo and blow dry this morning.

Woof to all you out there!
